FA Youth Futsal Cup - South West Regionals

FA Youth Futsal Cup - South West Regionals Update

On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th March five teams from Dorset took part in the regional stage of this year’s FA Youth Futsal Cup down in Paignton.  All of these teams had won the Dorset qualifying events for their age groups and earned the right to test themselves against the best teams from elsewhere in the South West of the country.

First up on the Saturday morning was the Under 14 Girls’ event, with Redlands Rebels flying the flag for Dorset.  After four tough matches they finished second in their group, narrowly missing out on progression to the national semi-finals.

In the afternoon it was the turn of the Under 12 and Under 10 girls to take to the pitch.  In the Under 12’s it was another Redlands Rebels side representing the county and despite a good result against Gloucester City, they couldn’t quite manage to progress further in the competition, finishing third in their group.  The Under 10 Girls’ category proved to be the fiercest contested, with three of the four teams competing ending on the same number of points.  Dorset’s Weymouth U10’s were one of these, ultimately missing out on top spot in the group on goal difference and coming second to one of the teams they had beaten.

Darren Faulkner, Coach & Manager of the Weymouth FC U10 Girls Football Team, said:

“The girls were fantastic at the South West Futsal tournament. They won their first 2 matches against teams that were purely Futsal based teams, we then lost our third match 5 - 2. The team that actually went on to win, we had already beaten 4-1, we came joint top but were pushed to 2nd on a goal difference of just 2 goals. Whilst we didn't progress to the semi-finals I am very proud of the girls and their performance as they have only been playing Futsal for 6 weeks."

On Sunday the Boy’s events got underway, with Bournemouth Youth Futsal and Wimborne and Holt championing Dorset in the Under 12 and Under 10 age groups respectively.  As with the Girls’ events the day before they both faced stiff opposition, with a number of specialist futsal teams in attendance.  In the Under 12’s, Bournemouth Youth Futsal put on a valiant display against teams from Plymouth and Salisbury, finishing third.  In the final category, Wimborne and Holt U10’s were in scintillating form, winning all four of their matches and the group.  This means they will be going on to represent Dorset in the semi-finals against teams from across England.

Across both days all five of our teams acquitted themselves magnificently and should be proud of what they have achieved in the FA Youth Futsal Cup this year.  Hopefully everyone involved enjoyed the experience and is keen to keep playing futsal.  Best of luck to Wimborne and Holt Under 10’s in their upcoming semi-final and whatever the result we look forward to hearing about how it goes.
