From the 14th to the 16th of December, Dorset FA held their county finals for seven different categories of the FA Futsal Cup. All of these were held at Bryanston School, whose amazing facilities provided a perfect setting for matches that took place.

On Saturday, it was the FA Youth Futsal Cup that took centre stage, with Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 Boys’ events taking place.  While this strand of the competition has been run for a number of years, the quality of the teams has kept increasing season on season, a trend that we hope to continue.  In the Under 10 competition it was Wimborne & Holt Youth who came out on top, remaining unbeaten across both their qualifier and the final. The same is true for the Under 12 category, where Wimborne & Holt Youth – who made last year’s national semi-finals – won a tightly contested competition. At Under 14 level, Lytchett Matravers Spitfires Yellows edged their group on the finest of margins. After all matches were played, it came down to a one goal better goal difference to separate the sides, due in part to a phenomenal display of goalkeeping in their final match. The final category on the day was the Under 16’s, in which two sides from Champion Sports played a full length futsal match that finished 10-8 and gave one team progression to the regionals.

With the conclusion of these competitions, attention turned to Sunday, when we hosted our first ever Adult Female qualifier for the FA Futsal Cup. Four of the top five teams from the Dorset Women’s League took part, vying for a single place in the next stage of the competition. With every team managing to pick up a win, who would progress came down to the final match between Poole Town Ladies and Broadstone Ladies.  Despite some outstanding play, the sides could not be separated and the draw was enough to see Poole Town Ladies finish top of the table.

Having broken new ground with Sunday’s competition, we continued this on Monday in running both Under 13 Boys’ and Under 13 Girls’ categories in the FA Schools Futsal Cup. School teams from across Dorset came together to put on some of the best displays of futsal across all competitions, which is fantastic for the sport going forwards. Everyone who took part was a huge credit to their schools and did themselves proud in how they approached the event.  Congratulations go to Poole Grammar School and Parkstone Grammar School for winning the Boys’ and Girls’ competitions respectively.  A special mention should also be made for students from Bournemouth University’s RELAYS programme, who played a vital role in ensuring Monday’s competitions ran as well as they did.

In addition to the seven sides listed here, three girls’ teams will be joining them in representing Dorset in the next round of the various competitions.  In the Under 14 and the Under 16 Girls’ categories, teams from Redlands FC stepped forward to take part, continuing the clubs’ support of futsal in the county.  For the Under 10 Girls’ it will be Corfe Mullen United Juniors who go forwards, having fully embraced futsal as an alternative format and looking to engage in as many futsal opportunities as they can with the team.

This means that in total, 10 teams will be competing under the Dorset banner in the next round of the various competitions, more than have ever done so before. This is a tremendous achievement and truly underlines the growing reach of futsal within the county.  Hopefully this is a trend we can continue to follow and we look forward to hearing how all of our teams do in the regionals of the FA Futsal Cup in 2020.
