Dorset FA Bobby Moore Walking Football Festival Successfully raises funds for Cancer Research UK!

Wednesday 31st July saw 11 Walking Football teams come together at The Specsavers County Ground, Hamworthy to raise funds for bowel cancer research (Cancer Research UK) as part of the national network of Bobby Moore Walking Football Festivals.

Bobby Moore was just 51 years old when he died. Shortly after his death in 1993, Bobby’s widow Stephanie Moore MBE set up the Bobby Moore Fund as a restricted fund of Cancer Research UK to fund pioneering bowel cancer research. Since Bobby’s death, the generosity of supporters has enabled the charity to raise over £27 million and mortality rates for bowel cancer have fallen by more than 30%. But sadly the disease still kills 44 people in the UK every day, showing we still have a long way to go to achieve our goal of tackling bowel cancer.

Teams competed in Over 50’s and Over 60’s age groups with AFC Bournemouth, Dexter Sports, Dorchester Town, Swanage and Weymouth all represented. Refereed by qualified WFA referees, the festival was played in a competitive yet well natured manner with eventual winners across the age groups being Dorchester Town.

More importantly the event has raised over £800 for Cancer Research UK’s Bobby Moore Fund and also achieved the aim of raising awareness of bowel cancer with those in attendance as players, referees, coaches and spectators.

All the teams attending the festival are part of the Dorset Walking Football League which will once again be offering league football for the 2019/20 season.
