Becoming a coach
With an ever increasing number of players in the girl’s game an increase in coaches is essential. Have you ever thought about becoming a coach? Perhaps you have but have then talked yourself out of it “I don’t know enough about football, I’ve never played so I wouldn’t be able to demonstrate, other people would be better than me.” Sound familiar?
McDonalds recently published a resource detailing some research on why Mum’s make good coaches. Have you ever thought about how the qualities of being a good Mum compare to the qualities of a good grassroots football coach?
They can:
- Plan and organise
- Have patience
- Can discipline
- Have good communication skills
- Understand the need to play and be creative
- Are good at confidence building
- Understand the value of team spirit

Of course it is not just Mum’s who make good coaches; perhaps you play football yourself or are planning to retire from the game but would like to stay involved. Maybe you are studying PE or sports studies at college or university and would like to get some experience of coaching grassroots girl’s football.
