What is the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football?
This award replaced the FA Coaching Certificate in 2001 and is the award required in order to qualify as Football Association Coach of young players, with UEFA certification.
How has the award changed?
The L2CCF has been developed in partnership with the Football Association and is one of a number of coaching qualifications awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications. It is now on the National Qualifications Framework, and whilst the majority of the course content is similar to the old coaching certificate a major difference is that the final assessment (more about this later) is now undertaken by someone who did not tutor on the original course.
Is it the right course for me?
You could be a parent running a local junior team and are looking to improve your coaching skills, you maybe a teacher wishing to pass your knowledge onto your students, you might want to add to your CV or indeed you may see this as a possible future career either at home or abroad. All of these people, and more besides have completed the L2CCF. If your knowledge of football is not that strong, we do recommend that you attend a Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Football, it is an excellent introduction to the coaching process and your County FA will give you information on a local course being run near you.
Will it take up much of my time?
The initial course is usually run over 7 days, or a number of weekends. There are additional sessions (usually evenings) which will cover Emergency First Aid, Safeguarding Children, and Laws of the Game (online).
Two additional days for your further development are also included. You will also be required to undertake a minimum of twelve hours verified coaching with a team, together with various post course theoretical tasks. Finally two days are required for your final assessment, this is normally held approximately 5-6 months after the initial course. As you can see it is a commitment, but one well worth making.
What will I learn on the course?
It is an extremely enjoyable course, your tutor will assist you to gain knowledge in the following areas:
Attitude and Ethics
Learning Strategies and Coaching Styles
Planning, preparing and evaluating coaching sessions
Football Fitness
Overuse Injuries
Child Protection
Growing up – young people in football
Football Food
Skills and Techniques from the Technical Syallabus
What does the assessment involve?
The assessment of the L2CCF is divided into two parts:The internal assessment is conducted by your tutor during the course and will include delivery of linked coaching sessions and the completion of various tasks. You will receive plenty of feedback during the course, this will prepare you for the next part.
The independent assessment is conducted by an assessor who has had no input into your training. This will include the delivery of a linked session, from technique through skill to small sided games. A short, individual oral interview will also be held.
Is there any practical work involved?
Yes! Naturally the tutor will need players to demonstrate various skills and practices. Whilst non-participation would not bar anyone from enrolling on the course, we do need some people with a willingness to contribute practically (small sided games format form part of the course). You will need appropriate playing kit. Your attention is drawn to the declaration on the application form.
Is there a lot of paperwork involved?
A fair amount, although the tutor/staff will give you every support. However if you feel that this might be a problem for you please contact the course organiser as extra support can be put in place to give you every assistance to complete the award. Further information is also on the application form.
