Two coach loads of Merley Allendale YFC U10s players, parents and officers of the Club left Merley at 6.30am on Monday 11 August 2008; for the long drive to Northwick Park and Wembley Stadium. The boys were full of excitement and anticipation, not knowing the amazing experience that was to lie ahead for the day.
When the boys arrived at Northwick Park they were greeted with the sight of other team coaches from all over the UK. However, the real excitement began as they made their way over to the Eric Harrison training area and were also greeted with the sight of the closely guarded ‘Charity Shield’ which they viewed meticulously, treasuring every moment.
At Northwick Park the energetic U10s team played three matches, winning two and drawing one. The players put their heart and souls in to every minute of each game, which paid off.
The time had come to get back on the coach and fight our way through traffic to the ultimate moment of the day – to play at The ‘Wembley Stadium’. The boys, Manager and Coaches separated from the spectators and made their way in to the Stadium for their short tour and walk through the tunnel. Meanwhile, the parents waited in the stands, in anticipation to see the U10s play on the hallowed turf.
The boys had another surprise – Fabio Capello (England Manager) greeted the teams and spoke to the players of every team. Possibly all too much to appreciate at that moment for an U10 player whose life is all about football!
After having their team photo taken with legend Sir Geoff Hurst, the boys finally played their long awaited match on the Wembley Pitch against a team representing Northamptonshire. Again, the boys fought hard and savoured every moment, eventually coming out on top. Merley Allendale had won their game at Wembley Stadium! The boys and coaches took their long walk up the steps to the royal box to receive their commemorative medals
from Sir Trevor Brooking.
When asked “what was the highlight of the day for you?” Player Sam Whitty answered, “playing football on the Wembley pitch and having some Wembley grass left on my boots!”
Club Secretary Jacqui Groves said “we have all had an amazing, unforgettable day that we are very grateful to have been given by all concerned. The boys played and behaved incredibly well and are a credit to the Club. Well done boys!”
